Terrible '90s Dromaeosaur Face-Off: Round 3

After David's rather highbrow post yesterday, dealing with fancy art history and all that jazz, it's time for me to drag standards back down again - from the painterly sublime to the sketchbook ridiculous. Yes, it's time for the third round of the Terrible '90s Dromaeosaur Face-Off™!

First of all, however, I must announce that last week's winner (again, by only a single vote!) was Deinonychus from The Humongous Book of Dinosaurs/Dinosaurs! magazine. Described as "pruney skinned" (David), a "mutant '80s allosaur" (Hadiaz) and possessing a left foot that represents no less than "evolution perfection" (Henrique Niza), may we have a round of applause for our wrinkly brown friend, please.

In the blue corner, this week sees the triumphant return of Know the World of Dinosaurs to the competition. With the book's Velociraptor having already won one round, it'll be interesting to see how its Deinonychus fares. Although similar in many ways, the Deinonychus is notably leaner and its head longer and shallower. Which means they probably arranged their page incorrectly.

In the red corner we have an old Vintage Dinosaur Art favourite - the Velociraptor from those strange Dinosaurier trading cards David unearthed. "Hilariously wrong" it may be, but is it a worthy contender against the anatomical train wreck put forward by Know the World of Dinosaurs? That decision is down to you, oh readers! What japes we have.

Remember, I'm after your suggestions for future nominees as well as your votes. My aim is to have four initial rounds, followed by two semi-finals and a stupendously exciting floppy-handed lizardy-skinned all-out brawl of a finale!

  1. I love the Velociraptor box at the bottom comparing the dino to a human figure. It looks like they're out taking a stroll together. I know I would take my velociraptor on regular walks (I hope he doesn't try to eat my neighbor's cats).

  2. I hadn't voted in either of the previous rounds. I wonder if I should start now...

However did you that with the 'TM'? I do not think this keyboard I'm using is capable of such textual fancies.

    Love your closing sentence. >_<

  3. @Niroot: I don't know the key combination off hand, so I looked it up in Character Map. Please do cast a vote!

  4. I vote for the blue corner, if only for the shiny highlights that suggest an almost slimy (or at the least highly polished) integument.

  5. It looks like they're out taking a stroll together.

I saw it as creeping up behind him to give him a wedgie. Wherefore it gets my vote.

  6. @Chris Y: That's uncanny (and had me laughing aloud).

@Marc: I never knew there was such a thing as a Character Map, Luddite that I am. -_- It's probably why I still write letters with a steel nib dip pen...

I prefer the overall appearance of the blue corner, but the presence of a 'fat lizardy thing' in the red may have just swayed my decision. Red corner it is, then.

  7. I'm going to vote Red Corner, because how does he even walk with those feet?

  8. Both are great but I've gotta give it to the Red Corner Croco-raptor with the tumor toes. I love this face off segment you have started. Always good for a laugh. Where can we submit potential contenders?

  9. I like the first one better, while the other looks horrible to my eyes, so that means I vote for which one again?

Guess it's the red corner. The other is too nice-looking to earn the shame of being the winner.

Also, how does one make suggestions exactly? I know of a pair of illustrations and the titles of the books whose pages they grace, but the images themselves I have no luck finding on the net. Should I just scan them?
Although I believe one of those is actually an early '80s book, don't know if that's perfectly eligible (please be, it has such a "not-Velociraptor").

  10. I'm going for the hideous mutant alligator man in the red corner.

  11. To everyone who's wondering how to submit a Terrible Dromaeosaur: just scan it, upload it somewhere a leave a comment here with the URL. I'll very much appreciate it. Hey, if we get enough contenders, then I might insert some extra rounds! (That awful noise you can hear is David screaming.)

  12. Oh, and Vrahno: I've said in previous posts that '80s entries are also fine. 'Cos I'm lax with the rules. Nothing earlier though, or we'd be awash with Bakker rip-offs ;)

  13. Red corner, absolutely. Look at that crocodile smile, the fleshy tail, the fact that one of his arms appears to be growing directly from his sternum. Shine on, you crazy diamond!

  14. @Marc: Ah, thanks. Must have skimmed over those comments. These were the ones I had in mind as possible nominees:

http://i52.tinypic.com/65vgr4.png - Velociraptor from Spotter's Guide to Dinosaurs & Other Prehistoric Animals

http://i55.tinypic.com/zxtahw.png - Velociraptors again form 100 Things You Should Know About Dinosaurs. Some sources say it's a much younger book, but the copy I have suggests otherwise and it's full of '90s stuff anyway.

  15. Those are great Vrahno. It would appear that illustrators of the 90s seemed to think that Velociraptor was some kind of upright crocodile. XD

  16. Red corner. I'm totally jealous that he can do a better split that I can.

  17. Whilst the blue corner scores points for the tiny sticks for fingers and the bags under the eyes, it has been bested in this round.
The red corner, with it's tiny sickle claws, the wry grin, the backwards finger on it's right hand but not the left. I don't know whether dinosaurs could rotate joints like that, and I don't care. This one has to win.

  18. Between a bipedal gecko and a bipedal crocodile with ostrich legs I will have to go with the second.

  19. I love the second one. He has a spring in his step that sets him apart.

  21. this might be a contender for another round. I'm absolutely baffled by these critters. My best guess is that they are supposed to be 'raptors'
