Terrible '90s Dromaeosaur Face-Off: Round 2

The votes are in! The winner in the first round of the Terrible '90s Dromaeosaur Face-Off is:

Velociraptor from Know the World of Dinosaurs! Described as "too plump not to pick" (Ryan DeLuca), looking "remotely...like a fat Deinonychus running downhill from an avalanche" (Nobu Tamura) and "an inflated bipedal Gila monster" (Henrique Niza), this rotund fellow wins by a stunted snout. Congratulations.

Now, let us introduce this week's contenders! In the blue corner, Deinonychus from The Humongous Book of Dinosaurs/Dinosaurs! magazine, courtesy of Trish:

And in the red corner, Velociraptor from 100 Dinosaurs from A to Z, courtesy of tnthielen (which is actually from 1986, but like I said last week, we're allowing the '80s here too):

Vote for your favourite! And remember, 'favourite' doesn't have to mean 'least ridiculous'. In fact, it can mean quite the opposite. That's down to you.

  1. Definitely the Velociraptor. I love how they put those beefy arms on there for good measure. The only thing it lacks is majesty.

  2. The beefy Velociraptor. The head is not as bad as the Deinonychus; put it's head on the velociraptor and we have a real winner.

  3. The Deinonychus clearly picked the wrong cup when trying to find the Holy Grail, and thus he deserves my pity. He gets my vote.

  4. I'm with Adam. I have to go with that pruney-skinned Deinonychus.

  5. For nostalgia's sake, I have to vote for the mutant 80's allosaur (I.e. "Deinonychus from The Humongous Book of Dinosaurs/Dinosaurs! magazine").

  6. I'm going for the "Velociraptor". It looks like the love child of Arnold Schwarzenegger and a monitor lizard.

  8. I have to vote for the blue corner. I remember reading those books in my childhood. They're actually the first dinosaur related books I have read. And the anatomy in that left foot is evolution perfection. :P

  9. Velociraptor has been hitting the gym and it shows! Gotta give it to that guy. Or he'll beat me up and take my lunch money.

  10. Sniggery Schwarziraptor against ugly Zombinychus? Schwarziraptor wins... Funny that the Deinonychus looks very similar to the orange winning Velociraptor from last week.

  12. @Henrique Niza

"I remember reading those books in my childhood. They're actually the first dinosaur related books I have read."

That's why I'm voting for the blue corner too.

  13. The chunky Velociraptor looks like it was loosely based on Sibbick's leaner version from The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs, although the body has been rotated a bit.

Blue corner is a competent enough rendering, while red corner looks like a doodle during class. Blue corner.

  14. @Mike Keesey That similarity had occurred to me too. Certainly Sibbick is one of the most ripped-off artists of all time. I don't know what Greg Paul's complaining about ;)
